Thrilling Crime Series: The unification of the crime families.

LEKKI PENINSULA, LAGOS

Yet another weekend had come and after three weeks of being shut down for renovations, LA TORMENTA, one of the largest and most exclusive nightclubs in the entire Lagos state, was open again for business.

The renovation work had been rushed but still wasn’t complete. Parts of the surrounding fence and the four-story high large building that was the nightclub itself were still being worked on but business and the fun loving wealthy members of the nightclub could wait no longer and so that Friday night, after three weeks of being dark and quiet, LA TORMENTA sitting proudly in its normal position on a wide private street just off the Lekki superhighway, was lit up in a blaze of glory. And it was clear to every visitor that the new owners were in full control.

Security was so tight; it was more like presidential protocol. The second garage next block down the road had been enlarged and more attendants employed to ensure decent parking for the tons of cars arriving and leaving at all hours. Only the most expensive cars were being allowed into the premises of the nightclub itself and a few of them were being directed to an even more exclusive packing area over to one side of the large compound by big men in suits who couldn't be argued with. The people who parked their cars in the special area of the compound even had a different entrance on the dark side of the building.

Once past all the heavy security, members were free and they were both stunned and delighted at the new look of the large hall. It was a lot better than before, more like a place that belonged in a top class American nightclub than anything else, but most importantly, not there wasn't just the usual one or two entertainers on hand but five; four top musicians in the country and one comedian had been engaged for that night alone.

As early as eight o’clock, the main hall of LA TOMENTA was packed to capacity and the night was already on full roll. Things had really changed big time.

The guests going in through the private entrance to the side of the nightclub were very special indeed and their destination was the special VIP lounge on the third floor overlooking the entire dance hall below. The guests were important looking men with one or two bodyguards in attendance. Most of them knew each other very well and so mingled and chatted freely as they drank away at the expensive wine served to them by lovely waitresses in expensive designer dresses.

The whole place was filled with the din of the music from the dance floor below but that didn't seem to bother anyone. Some of the men sat on the expensive white leather sofas arranged around the lounge while others stood by the railing looking down into the sea of humanity on the dance floor below.  Some were together while others were alone but they were all waiting.

They waiting patiently.

Soon enough a door opened and Louis, Madam T’s nephew and PA walked in. In a few words and gestures, he invited the guests to follow him.

The men left their bodyguards behind and followed Louis up a short flight of stairs to the fully air-conditioned fourth floor where Madam T had her new office and private domain. Only her bodyguards were allowed here and they were everywhere, dangerous looking big men in dark suits standing at every door and every comer.

Louis led the men to the end of a wide hallway where four hard faced big men stood guarding a set of shiny brown double doors. The bodyguards eyed each of the guests closely for concealed weapons or suspicious expression as they followed Louis through the double doors but made no move to stop or touch any of them. These were the full partners that made the Black Axe family what it was and so were fully trusted. Still.....

In the large room beyond the double doors, there was a large mahogany conference table with thirteen high-backed leather chairs around it. There was a gold placard with a name on the table before each chair, eleven placards in all.

“Please, see to your seats, gentlemen,” said Louis moving to stand off to one side, watching.

The eleven men went around quietly, each checking for the placards with his names on it and once found, he took the seat indicated.

In a moment, all eleven men were seated in their places along both sides of the table but the seat at the head of the table and the one on its right-hand side stayed empty. There were no placards there.

Satisfied that all was correct, Louis left the room through another door, leaving the guests alone

The man sat quietly, looking around them and talking in low tones as they waited patiently. Five minutes later the door opened again and a bodyguard walked into the room.

The big man held the door open and Louis walked in, behind him came Helen Benson, big, beautiful and elegant in a floor-length red dress. Next came Bruce, the number one enforcer of the Black Axe family, watchful and alert, and finally, flanked by another two of her top enforcers, Hector and Maxwell, mean looking big men over six feet in height, majestic and beautiful in a flowing floor-length yellow dress, expensive gold and diamond jewellery flashing in all the right places, came Madam Augustina Benson.

All the men at the table rose to their feet at once.
