Latest on Chelsea Transfers

English Premier League champions, Chelsea FC, seem to have woken up from their lengthy transfer slumber with the announcement today of the signing of a world class defender.

The announcement which was made on their website just hours ago, featured the ‘world class defender’ and the club's technical director, Michael Emenalo, all smiles as the contract was signed and a shirt issued to the player.

The deal involving the transfer of German international defender, Antonio Rudiger, after weeks of speculation and uncertainty, has finally fallen through and so smoothly too.

The 24-year old all-action defender has now officially completed the switch from Italian Giants AS Roma to EPL kings, Chelsea on a five-year contract.

The transfer, which is reportedly in the region of thirty-one million pounds, could see Chelsea paying up to 34 million pounds based on add-ons.

Antonio Rudiger has been handed the all-famous No. 2 jersey which was formerly the property of Ex-Chelsea star, Ivanovic.

Both player and club seem pleased with the development and Chelsea fans on Twitter have heaved a sigh after a weekend of being mercilessly trolled by Manchester United fans following their highjack of the 100 million pound Romelu Lukaku deal.

It is claimed in some quarters that Antonio Rudiger's love for Arsenal was a stumbling block in the early stage of the deal but all of that seems to have been sorted out now given the huge smile on the players face as he signed off on the deal in short order.

Chelsea made it through last season with just three proven center backs in the persons of David Luiz, Gray Cahill and Caesar Azpilicueta with an aging John Terry, a rehabilitating Kurt Zuma, and an uncertain Nathan Ake as backups.

They got lucky last season as none of these three major center backs got sidelined with some serious injury and so each was always there for the next major game until the club lifted the English Premier League trophy at the end of the season.

However, at the FA Cup final against Arsenal, that defense was undone, and in this new season the club will be getting lots of Champions League action, hence manager Antonio Conte’s desperation to add to his backline, particularly following the departure of John Terry to Aston Villa and Nathan Ake to Bournemouth.

Antonio Rudiger is a young defender with lots of experience both at club and country level and he will be bringing a lot into an aging backline that leaked goals last season despite being one of the best in the English Premier League.

Antonio Rudiger’s Style Of Play

Antonio Rudiger is an intelligent and uniquely versatile defender who, much like Caesar Azpilicueta, can play anywhere all along the defensive line.

Originally a centre-back, Antonio Rudiger can play at right back, left back, and on either side of the centre-half.

He will most likely begin his career at Chelsea by replacing Nigerian international,  Victor Moses, at right-back and then, later, moving on to the replace a slowing Gray Cahill in the critical center-back position because it's most unlikely that Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, will not want to tamper with the formidable defensive partnership already formed by David Luiz and Gray Cahill. And here lies one reason why young Nathan Ake was sold off rather than the aging Gray Cahill.

With Antonio Rudiger in the bag now, Chelsea will turn their attention fully to securing a new striker, a left-back, and a holding midfielder
