The board of Chelsea FC has informed star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois that they are prepared to let him leave on a free transfer at the expiration of his current contract,

The Belgium international’s current deal with the club expires in June 2019 and fresh talks over an extension have stalled after the Belgian demanded a phenomenal wage increase the Blues are not willing to meet.

The Sun news tabloid of London reports this morning that Chelsea will stake a firm stand and refuse to sell Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid both this January and next summer. They prefer to have him run down his contract rather than receive a cut-price as a transfer fee. The report also suggests that Thibaut Courtois does not expect the contract talks to continue with Chelsea until next summer when the end current campaign comes to an end.

This development comes just a week after Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte urged the club to give the Belgian that which he wanted.

Thibaut Courtois has become one of the most influential players at Chelsea ever since displaceing Peter Check as the clubs No.1 choice.
