Chelsea Latest News In A Nutshell

EPL champions Chelsea FC have waltzed into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating AFC Bournemouth 2-1 at their home grounds Stamford Bridge.

The game was, by no means, one to remember even for Chelsea. Going by the youthful team selection, one can conclude that the Carabao Cup is certainly not a priority for Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte. Teen star Ethan Ampadu was given the opportunity to impress and this time in the middle of a make-shift back-three defense, and he worked wonders with the opportunity despite a yellow card a few minutes into the game.

It was a rather uneventful game with Bournemouth sitting deep most the time, and so it took some rather smart link-up play from the Chelsea midfield to slice a way through that packed up defense. Brazilian star Kennedy had a moment of magic there when he flipped the ball forward with a wonderful backheel that sent Cesc Fabregas and William racing clear of the tight pack of Bournemouth’s defense e. Fabregas put the ball on a plate for Willian who shot it into the back of the net to give the Premier League champions the lead in front of their home supporters.

Bournemouth seemed to come to life after that. They dominated the second half of the game but failed to find a pathway through Chelsea’s solid back-line which was being marshaled not by veteran and captain Gray Cahill but teenager Ethan Ampadu. It wasn’t until the 90th minute that Bournemouth ‘s Dan Gosling fired the ball into the net from the edge of the box, giving the visitors a goal that looked to ensure the game head into extra-time at the Bridge.

Earlier in the second half, even manager Conte was seeing the problems in his side. Batshuayi was underperforming massively and the Bournemouth defender had him under lock and key. Padro was no better and William magic had faded. But more importantly, the Chelsea midfield was being overrun now; the combination of Fabregas and simple performing Drinkwater was solid but not dynamic. French powerhouse Bakayoko was brought in to fix the midfield situation while Hazard and Morata were introduced to bring the game home.

Once that goal came to make the scores 1-1 right at stoppage time, the home crowd were downcast. But Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard weren’t though, the situation brought out the fire in them. And once the game got off again they bombed forward and their beautiful link-up play saw Morata head a long ball to Hazard who flipped it in nicely to set the Spaniard up in a one on one with the Bournemouth keeper who never stood a chance.

The goal sent a roar through the Stanford Bridge as the crowds with into an epilepsy of jubilation. And Morata? He stuck the ball right under his shirt, clearly paying tribute to his pregnant wife. Unfortunately, the referee hit him with a yellow card and this means the attacker will miss the next game against Everton.

Ethan Ampadu who replaced Andres Christiansen in the heart of the Chelsea defense proved to be a wonder indeed. He handled all well and completed all his passes. In fact, this 17-year-old Welish international was the brightest spot, the captain, and leader on a night that almost all the startup players in the blues lineup perfumed woefully. Even before the end of the match, the crowds were singing his praise and on twitter they had him pegged for Man of the Match award. Mind you, this guy had the like of Gray Cahill and Antonio Rudiger flanking him with even Fabregas on the field. It is now safe to say that Chelsea have another viable opinion in the central defense passion, very bad news for David Luiz.

As for Batshuayi, he will definitely be sold or sent out on loan this January. Kenedy seems destined for Newcastle on Loan.
