brain disease

Pollution has been indicated as the major cause of early signs of a horrific brain disease in children, Alzheimer’s disease.

This discovery of the possibility of early brain disease in children is the result of dedicated research by a team of international doctors in North America.

This research revealed that air pollution could be responsible for early signs of Alzheimer’s disease in children.

It was discovered that kids as young as 3 years-old are actually being damaged by very tiny magnetic particles in the air caused by cars and vehicle brakes in general. These tiny particles, traveling through the air, end up getting into the brain and thus lead to dementia (brain disease).

Brain Health And Brain Disease

A team of researchers from the United States and Mexico examined the brain tissues of young children of various ages, kids, teenagers and young adults, all in Mexico City, a city known for its heavily polluted (dirty) air.

This dedicated team of scientists used a unique scanner called a transmission electron microscope (TEM) in their examinations and this led to the identification of pollution as the most likely cause of Alzheimer’s (Brain) disease in the children.

The scientists discovered that perfectly healthy young children exposed to pollution had difficulties with their abilities of smell and taste, which is one of the earliest symptoms of dementia (Brain Disease).

The subjects of the study also had poorer memory, low attention spans and remarkably lower IQ than their counterparts under the same study who lived out in the less polluted areas of the countryside.

Taking part in the study is the reputable Professor Lilian Calderon-Garciduenas of the University of Montana, USA. According to him, ‘the colossal effects of poverty, hunger, urban violence and urban stress on reduced cognitive skills are equally very important for the developing brain (of a child) and therefore cannot be ignored’.

The doctor added that gender, APOE, and BMI tend to influence children’s cognitive responses to all kinds of air pollution. But in the case of pollution from vehicles and breaks, the effect may be far worse than imagined.

Most renowned scientists have already welcomed the results of the study which was published earlier this week but some are still calling for more research on the issue as there may be more hidden facts on a complex subject as this.

One of such renowned scientist calling for more research is Dr. Rosa Sancho, head of research at the Alzheimer’s Research UK. The well-respected doctor thinks that the new study may not tell the whole story of the damage pollution is really doing to kids

She sees it as ‘interesting’ that other scientists have started investigating the presence of these particles within the brain, but feels it’s too early to arrive at the conclusion that these tiny magnetic particles may have a fundamental role in Alzheimer’s disease or any other kind of brain disease, particularly given the fact that the study was conducted only on younger people.

The result of this study was published in the prestigious Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease earlier this week.

It is a follow-up study on another conducted last year which found like magnetic particles from air pollution in the brains tissues of people from the highly populated city of Manchester, England. These people all suffered neurodegenerative disease.

Aside from these brain diseases brought on by air pollution, there are many other ailments in line to affect people living in cities with high levels of pollution. One of such ailments is cancer.

Conclusion

Does your brain health matter to you? Whether an adult or child, to avoid polluted areas is to avoid all manner of brain diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease.

Brain disease in any form is one of the most terrible things to happen to a child or an adult for that matter. Now that we know one symptom and cause of the brain disease, Alzheimer’s disease, it is best to avoid it at all costs.
