Modern Slavery, Slave Market and Torture Camps Booming in Libya

In recent days news filtering out of Libya has been screaming of the modern slavery and slave trade going on in open in that country. That nation is literally a huge slave market.

Within the last twenty-four hours, photos and videos of the booming modern slavery centers and slave market (s) and torture camps have surfaced, leading to widespread outrage across the world, particularly in Africa.

Reacting to the situation, Libya’s UN-backed government has announced that it has already embarked on investigating in the allegations of modern slavery within its borders.

The information being leaked has it that hundreds of thousands of young African refugees and migrants passing through the war-torn North African county are being bought and sold in open modern-day slave market (s) which hold in open car parks and such open spaces.

Due to the poverty and hard conditions all across Africa, tens of thousands of vulnerable people risk everything to get to Libya’s Mediterranean coast in a bid to cross the sea into Europe – a route that’s been described on several occasions as the deadliest travel route on earth.

Libya, a country located right across the sea from Italy, is the main gateway for Africans trying to reach Europe by sea, with well over 200,000 young people making the hazardous crossing in the last three years.

“They [the refugees] are from several African countries and they say they have fled war, poverty and unemployment in their countries . “They have taken a tough journey through the desert and they have paid people smugglers to get to Libya to try to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.”  says one report.

With the security and financial collapse in Libya, human trafficking and smuggling, modern slavery of all kinds, have become a booming trade,” says Mahmoud Abdelwahed, reporting from a detention center in the Libyan capital Tripoli. Modern-day slavery is widespread around the world and Libya is by no means unique …

But what’s so shocking is that all this is happening effectively in the open, where people can go to a car park or farmhouse, any place a bid and end up ‘owning’ a human being. There is no proper registration process for the tens of thousands of refugees arriving in Libya. According to reports, the business of modern slavery begins with detention centers which are unsupervised in some parts of Libya and stories of torture, rape and forced labor have emerged.

When the detention camps and centers get too crowded, people are then sold off like goods in an open market. Survivors have told the UN’s migration agency that they make use of smartphones to connect with smuggling agents to get them across the desert to Libya’s coast. But they were betrayed and instead sold into modern slavery, after being held for ransom, and used as forced labor or for sexual exploitation.

The International Organization for Migration says modern slavery and trade in human beings has become so normalized that black people are being bought and sold in public for as little as $400.

“As shocking as it seems, it’s indeed true,” says Leonard Doyle from the International Organization for Migration as he speaks to Counting the Cost. “The reason it [slave trade] can happen is that there is really no rule of law across much of Libya. Libya is a country as big as France, with a lot of space and little by way of law. “Migrants are coming here by the thousands … they see the promise of a new life when they go to their Facebook feed and they think something wonderful is waiting for them in Europe because a smuggler has abused the system and sold them that lie.”

He explains that when they arrive in Libya, “they get off the bus and they are quickly put into a kind of murder machine, an extortion machine. They are robbed of their possessions, their families are called. They are forced, they are tortured, they give them money. And then they are sold.

Unbelievable, but they are sold in open, public auctions: $400 for a laboring man, maybe a bit more for a woman who can be put in the sex trade. And this is what’s happening across the country.” Doyle stresses that this issue shows that the international community should pay more attention to post-Gaddafi Libya. “There is an international responsibility to help … What is particularly important now is that this issue is reaching global attention,” says Doyle.

A lot of celebrities have shaded tears openly in the last 24 hours since the leak of these images. We sure hope the United Nation will act on this because the Libyan Government won’t. Another country this sort of thing is going on in is Oman.

Arabs have a thing for slaves which is why modern slavery is going on in one way or another in all their lands, even Saudi Arabia, though that country pay its slaves very well and gives them more freedom.
